“Women Speaking Out Against Oppression – A Celebration of International Women’s Day in Milwaukee”

Since 1977, the United Nations has made International Women’s Day a celebration focusing on both women’s rights and world peace. The first International Women’s Day was celebrated in 1911 when women’s suffrage and health advocacy organizations called attention to the social, economic, and cultural achievements of women across the globe.

You are invited to hear presentations by the following women on issues related to oppression.

A video interview with Lakota elder Madonna Thunder Hawk about her life of defending Native American rights from Alcatraz to Standing Rock. She is a founding member of Women of All Red Nations, helped set up a tribal Child Protective Services Agency to keep Native children in their community, and works with the Lakota Peoples Law Project.  She will also be speaking via Skype at the UWM Lubar Entrepreneurial Center on the UWM Campus at the corner of Kenwood Boulevard & Maryland Avenue on Sunday – March 8th at 2 PM.

Martha Collins, Commissioner on the City of Milwaukee Equal Rights Commission and UNA-MKE board member, will speak about progress on the UN Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) for Milwaukee being passed as a City Resolution and how to implement the provisions as a binding City Ordinance.

Nancy Ezell, a former incarcerated person for a non-violent felony with a serious illness, will speak about the problem of women in prison accessing good medical care. She received a compassionate release at the urging of MICAH and WISDOM (groups that advocate for ending mass incarceration and reform of WI prisons).

Ashley Jordan, a lawyer and women’s rights activist, will speak on the fierce struggle for women’s reproductive rights in Wisconsin. She is active in the movement for Reproductive Justice and works with POWERS to empower women to make choices in pregnancy.

The UNA-GM is a group of men and women who stand for peace and justice in the world and believe that the United Nations is an instrumental force in creating a peaceful world and supporting the work and efforts of the UN by educating, inspiring, and mobilizing our Milwaukee Community. 

The UNA-GM meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month from January – June and September – December from 10 AM – Noon at Redeemer Lutheran Church (rear entrance) located at 631 N. 19th Street in Milwaukee.  Each monthly meeting features a presentation & discussion on a specific topic relevant to the work of the UN.
