Thea Bowman: Active Contemplative and Mystic

 

Servant of God Sr. Thea Bowman was a transformative figure in U.S. Church history.

A member of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration and the only African American sister in her congregation, Sr. Thea worked tirelessly to promote the gifts of peoples of African American descent in the Catholic Church.

Her charismatic personality, gift of song and spiritual depth made her a popular speaker in various arenas.

Facilitator C. Vanessa White, D. Min., is Associate Professor of Spirituality and Ministry at Catholic and Director of the Certificate in Black Theology and Ministry at Catholic Theological Union at Chicago. Dr. White was honored to have known Sr. Thea during her lifetime and will share with you her own experience of knowing Sr. Thea through storytelling and music, so that you may be able to encounter the spirituality and the joy of Sr. Thea!
