TRADITIONAL CHAI + STORYTELLING W/ BELA SURESH ROONGTA
I have been storytelling since first becoming a lawyer and domestic violence advocate in 1994. As a lawyer it was my job to listen, capture, and give voice to my client’s, often intimate, stories. Listening to and capturing their stories left me in awe of the human experience and our capacity to endure when we are able to tell our stories and be heard. It is this insight, understanding and sensitivity that I bring to my visual & written art practice.
My art and storytelling tells of our collective experiences, shared humanity and most sacred right to be seen and heard. I believe strongly in the power of human connection and am guided by my conviction that it is in each others’ stories that we find the beauty of the human spirit.
In 2017 I published a book of my original designs and the stories they tell, “…fill in the beauty, a book for the storyteller and artist in all of us.” It is a book from my heart. One in which I share my story so that others will have the courage to share theirs. I am also the recipient of the Governor’s Women in Business, Special Recognition Trailblazer award for innovation and success as an entrepreneur and the Pfister Hotel’s 2019-20 Narrator (Writer)-in-Residence. These achievements, my work as a lawyer and domestic violence advocate, and my visual and written art practice have made me the artist and storyteller I am today.
Born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to East Indian parents, I was raised in the West and grew up oceans away from my family and culture. Although disconnected from my roots, I have always loved the art of East Indian henna, the inspiration behind my visual art practice, and homemade chai. These two things, more than anything else, brings me home to my roots and is at the heart of my art and storytelling.
In India, Chai is a time to sit, rest and share in the moments, big and small, of the day. One of the oldest drinks in history, Chai warms the belly and the heart. Mystical, enchanting and steeped in tradition and love, I invite you to travel back to India with me, enjoy a cup of chai and share your story.
