In conjunction with its current exhibit of works by photographer Larry D’Attilio, Alfons Gallery will host a panel discussion about the exhibit on Sunday, February 24, from 1:00-2:30 p.m. Panelists will include D’Attilio and fellow artists Rosie Hartmann, Bill Mueller, and Alfons Gallery Director Valerie J. Christell.
D’Attilio said that he hopes the panel discussion will bring about a deeper understanding of the work displayed in “The New Global Women,” which runs through March 10, and share insight into the art form of montage photography.
“The New Global Women” is a photographic exploration of the challenges faced by young Vietnamese women. D’Attilio found the inspiration for his work while he was a resident artist at Campus Ha Noi in Vietnam from 2006-2007.
“In Vietnam, a country sprinting towards first-world status, some women suddenly have the same freedom to make decisions for themselves that Western women have,” D’Attilio wrote in his artist statement for the exhibit. “But how do they deal with their overwhelming inner dialogue trying to balance their sense of self with all the traditional expectations?”
“I’m extremely pleased that D’Attilio has agreed to engage in a conversation about his work,” Christell said. “His immersion in the Vietnamese culture provides an important background and viewpoint on the issue of changing women’s roles.”
“This panel discussion format will offer a unique opportunity to hear from Larry as well as other photographers he’s associated with about creating visual statements,” Christell said. “It promises to engage the audience in stimulating conversations about the artistic viewpoint and process.”
