The Warehouse presents: Jan Serr: A Painter’s Photographs of India

Presented by The Warehouse at The Warehouse

Sep 13 - Dec 13, 2019

Exhibition: September 13th - December 13th, 2019 Where: The Warehouse | 1635 W Saint Paul Avenue | Milwaukee, WI 53233 With a decades - long career exhibiting both nationally and internationally, painter and printmaker Jan Serr presents a new body of work: her photographs. An avid scholar of India and its cultural, political, religious, and artistic histories, Serr first traveled to northern India in 2009. A long distance from her paintbrushes, ink, and press, Serr brought her camera to capture moments during her stay. Nearly 10 years later she did the same in southern India. Together, the elements of these photos create painterly passages of line, color, and light. While photography is a shift in medium by an artist well established in her career, these photographs reflect Serr's confident, trained, and inquisitive eye.   About Jan Serr (b. 1943):  Serr is a graduate and Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she received her…

The drawings, along with archival photographs, demonstrate the whirlwind pace of the company’s early growth. While building an international business—going from producing just over 1,000 motorcycles in 1909 to manufacturing 27,000 motorcycles in 1920—the company’s Milwaukee factory experienced near-constant expansion. Construction through this relatively brief period created the buildings that today, a century later, are still the proud home of Harley-Davidson. While motorcycle production ceased at the site in 1973, today the Juneau Avenue facility serves as the company’s corporate headquarters and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The facility is a highly…
