The talk will lead into discussion on his ideas and themes of past and current work beginning with one of his earliest pieces, Squat (1966). Originally exhibited in the Artists of Chicago and Vicinity exhibition, Squat was later included in the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition The Machine at the End of the Mechanical Age and traveled to the University of St. Thomas in Houston and the San Francisco Museum of Art. Daredevils have thrilled audiences for centuries. What began with horse trick riders in circuses inspired new generations of entertainers on bicycles, motorcycles, cars – even flying sofa chairs. From touring thrill shows to Hollywood movie stunt work, “Daredevils” celebrates the exciting history of these death-defying. Witness how incredible feats from long ago inspire modern-day risk-takers. Drawing on the legendary acts from around the world that left sold-out audiences slack-jawed, “Daredevils” will feature a cavalcade of performers who’ve leapt to fame. A few highlights include: The Urias Family Globe of Death, which was first constructed in 1912 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Between 1910 and 1920, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company went from a Milwaukee startup to a global success story. When the dust settled at the end of that formative decade, Harley-Davidson stood tall as the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. A recently discovered cache of architectural drawings includes sketches of the original Juneau Avenue facility. The drawings, along with archival photographs, demonstrate the whirlwind pace of the company’s early growth. While building an international business—going from producing just over 1,000 motorcycles in 1909 to manufacturing 27,000 motorcycles in 1920—the company’s Milwaukee factory experienced near-constant expansion. Construction through this relatively brief period created the buildings that today, a century later, are still the proud home of Harley-Davidson. While motorcycle production ceased at the site in 1973, today the Juneau Avenue facility serves as the company’s corporate headquarters and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
